This creates fat build up around our abdominal area. Science has shown that abdominal fat can lead to a person's risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke and some types of cancer. Fatty liver affects more than 50% of people over the age of 50.

Is there anything we can do to naturally detox the liver without harsh drugs or chemicals?
We all want the quick fix, but surprisingly cutting back on alcohol and caffeine, eating less fat and animal protein, snacking on fewer refined and processed foods, and adding more healthful, whole, plant-based foods, is the best and most natural way to get rid of the toxins and start healthier living for a longer life.

An easy start to flush your liver clean is by drinking a cocktail consisting of glass of water, an ounce of unsweetened cranberry juice, and two ounces of orange juice. This good tasting concoction flushes the liver and reduces inflammation in the liver's tissues, helping it work better.

Clinical trials show that Milk Thistle contains silymarin which increases the growth of healthy liver cells. The recommended dose is 300mg daily. I like to drink Milk Thistle tea.

A healthy liver needs regular doses of the antioxidant glutathione and avocados can do just that. It is suggested that one or two avocados a week will do the trick. They are high in calories so be sure to add them into your daily calorie intake.

Cutting down on pain relievers is another step in having a healthy liver as well as daily exercise. Walking is considered an excellent form of exercise because it activates the liver's detox process.

You are ultimately responsible for the health of your body and having a healthy liver is primary to living a healthy life.

Remember, never take any supplement or change your lifestyle without consulting your medical adviser. But more recent work has shown that all cells in the body have "vitamin D receptors" which help control normal cell growth. Additionally, Garland presented new evidence that low vitamin D status compromises the integrity of calcium-based cellular bonding within tissues, which when eroded allow rogue cancer cells to spread more readily.

If you don't make any other health change in your life, make sure you are getting the recommeded amount of Vitamin D - 2,000 IU daily.

Reminder: Always check with your professional medical adviser before making and changes in your health routine.

For more information about the halth benefits of Vitamin D - see Vitamin D at Healing Food

M. Get medical help if you need to but QUIT.

Watch your exposure to UV, sunlight rays. Wear sunscreen every day and if you are very fair skinned, wear a hat and cover up exposed areas, especially during the hot summer months and in close to the equator areas.

You need daily intake of antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables to help repair your damaged cells. Green, orange and yellow fruits and vegetables are your best bet to help prevent cancer. Recent studies have found that dark fruits, like blueberries and grapes also have anti-cancer properties.

Cut back, to almost eliminate red meat which contains more fat than poultry and fish, and links to various cancers have been found to a diet made up of numerous servings of red meat. High fat diets are also a major cause of obesity, which is a risk factor for many types of cancer.

Other factors in lifestyle being linked to cancer are alcohol, toxic work environment, exposure to fumes, dust and chemicals.

Exercise! exercise! Exercise! The American Cancer Society recommends exercising 30 minutes, at least 5 days a week for cancer prevention.

This is for information only and should not be considered professional medical advice. Always check with your health adviser before making changes in lifestyle.

Taken from http://www.squidoo.com/healthboosters

M. I'm not kidding. Do you limit your kid's sugar intake but have a secret stash of cookies in the pantry for your two o click fix?

Or do you crave foods that are unhealthy -- chocolate bars, cookies or salty chips or greasy French fries? Honestly, who craves water and rice cakes?

You are not alone. Thousands of women are on the endless cycle of “being good” and then “falling off the wagon

Cravings Coach, Diana Walker, knows what you are going through and can help you move easily out of the Craving a Food Fix mode.

From Cucumbers to Hemp Seeds, Diana knows what works and what doesn't.

She maintains that "Hemp seeds curb your cravings for sweets and increase your energy level. All of the nutrients in the seeds help your body stay balanced and full nourished."

Find out what she has to say about Cucumbers! Who knew that Cucumbers contain most of the vitamins you need every day, just one cucumber contains Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, Vitamin C, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium and Zinc.

I learned a long time ago that a lack of important vitamins can create cravings and we often it various foods, most of the time unhealthy snack food, before we satisfy that desire.

Avoid sugar cravings by avoiding any sugar. Hard to do. Diana says the best way to curb sugar cravings is to aim for a stable blood sugar. You can do this by avoiding sugary treats and drinks like candy, soda and even fruit drinks. Instead try sweetening your foods and drinks with stevia. Please avoid any artificial sweeteners.

If you are plagued with cravings, you want to read all about it and get it from the Craving Coach.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://healingfoodandspices.blogspot.com/2009/11/stop-cravings-you-can-do-it.html' title='Stop Cravings! What is the trigger?

How about alcohol as in wine/beer? Is it becoming a problem? Might it be stress?

Is coffee one of your 'perk me up' things you think you have to have?

Here's a biggie! Soft Drinks as in Colas even sugar free can be a creating more and more cravings!

And of course, salty snacks.

If you have any of these cravings--believe that each time you give into one--it will be a trigger to another and before you know it, you could be binging.

I had to not eat carbs until later in the day or I found I was craving bread, or some kind of carb every hour or so. Especially potato chips--I stopped having them in the house.

Then I learned what else caused addictive triggers that got me reaching for things I knew would just lead to more cravings.

You have to learn how to spot those triggers and how to stop those triggers.

One way is to read Craving Secrets

The author, Diana Walker, says "seemingly harmless craving for a favourite food or drink could be sabotaging your physical and mental health?"

She has worked for years with people who have intense food cravings and has helped them release those addictive demons.

As she says in the book, "A food craving is much, much more than a preference for a particular food, or an impulse to buy a certain snack. A food craving is an intense and uncontrollable desire for a type of food. When you have a craving for a food, you’ll go to any lengths to satisfy it. Cravings can be distracting and disastrous to your health."

Look at Diana's book, Craving Secrets

Hope you will find it as fascinating and helpful as I have.

M. The oils maintain the odors and tastes, and thus the essence, of the plant they are extracted from. They are stronger, more volatile than the dried herbs.

The research proved that the three essential oils were effective, natural barriers against E. coli, Salmonella and Listeria, although there were some differences between the three EOs. Garlic, for example, did little to stop E. coli or Salmonella but delivered a knock out punch against Listeria.

The same group of USDA researchers found that EOs from cinnamon, allspice and cloves also can protect food from a host of bacteria.

To learn more about the healing power of Essential Oils check out - The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy

Make an essential oil candle from an unscented candle,

(1) While you are burning your unscented candle, let it burn until there is a pool of melted wax around the wick.
(2) When you have a nice pool of liquid wax, you are ready to add your essential oil(s) Add a few drops of the oil(s) of your choice to the pool of wax, and leave the candle to harden. **WARNING: blow out your candle BEFORE adding your oil. Some oils are volitile, so never ever add oils while your candle is still burning
(3) When the wax has completely cooled down and hardened, you may light the candle again, and the aroma will slowly be released as the candle burns.

M. Fiala, David Geflen School of Medicine, wrote that research found a form of Vitamin D called D3, and a chemical in the spice Turmeric, called curcumin, offer promise for the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's. The study showed that combing the two helped stimulate the immune system to clear away destructive plaques in the brain that are a hallmark of the disease. He also said more studies are needed.

In previous blogs and Squidoo lenses, I've written about the healing powers of both Vitamin D and also of Turmeric. Potatoes are another source of potassium. For more on the healing powers of bananas, see,

Healing Power of Bananas!

Celery- One of the most powerful foods you can eat to lower your blood pressure. Celery contains an oil that relaxes muscles that regulate blood pressure, improving flow. Try making a celery broth or juice at home.

Salmon, or other cold water fish. High in Omega 3, the fatty acid that is a heart healthy food. Other source of Omega 2 is Flaxseed. Grind some, sprinkle on soups and salads.

And the best advice I've found from reading reliable medical reports is to add fruit, vegetables, and fiber to your daily food list. Lower fatty meats, refined food with trans fat and hydrogenated products.

I know you're tired of hearing it, but Exercise, Exercise, Exercise. (Beans, lentils, and peanuts are known as legumes). Based on a review from the Nurse's Study II, women who ate lentils or beans just twice a week reduced their risk of developing breast cancer by 24% compared to women who ate beans and lentils once a month or less.

No way the little tiny bean can do all that! Yep, it can do all that and more!

How about anti aging? Because of beans antioxidant properties they are a fantastic anti-aging food. One study found that red beans have the highest antioxidant level, with black beans coming in second.

A great source of protein since 1/4 cup of any legume is equivalent in protein to an ounce of meat without the high fat content.

In a study reported in the 'Archives of Internal Medicine', men and women who consumed beans 4 times a week had a 22% lower risk for heart disease and they are considered a good method of balancing sugar levels in diabetics.

A nice thing about beans, as far as cooking and consuming, it doesn't matter if you buy, soak and cook beans or use the canned variety, they have the same health benefits. One difference is the salt content and for those who need to reduce their sodium intake, it is recommended the canned beans be rinsed thoroughly before eating.

If you aren't big on beans, try this more than just a little healthy recipe.

Great Minestrone-

4 cups vegetable stock
2 (14.5 ounce) cans stewed tomatoes
1 large potato, cubed
1 onion, chopped
2 stalks celery, chopped
2 carrots, chopped
1 large head cabbage, finely chopped
2 tablespoons Italian seasoning
1 (15 ounce) can kidney beans
3 cups fresh corn kernels
1 large zucchini, sliced
1 cup uncooked orzo pasta
salt and pepper to taste

..DIRECTIONS

1.In a large soup pot combine the vegetable stock, the undrained tomatoes, potato, onion, celery, carrot, cabbage and Italian seasoning. It's been found that curry's main substance, turmeric, works similarly to non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like Celebrex because it inhibits the effect of COX-2, a body chemical that causes pain.

The actual main ingredient in Curry/Turmeric is Curcumin, a strong antioxidant.

Yesterday I heard Dr. Isador Rosenfeld, say it has been found that eating curry twice a week can be a barrier against Alzheimer's disease. Many researchers believe India's low rate of alzheimer's disease can be attributed to their large consumption of curry/turmeric.

There are numerous studies showing that tuermeri'c active ingredient has an anti-tumor effect and may even stop the growth of existing cancer cells.

There are cautions when using any spice as a medicine. Not always tested on humans, and some can be counteractive to medicine, it is always advised you check with your medical adviser before using any food as a curative.

This recipe is filled with spices that have recently been found to have healing properties.

Chicken Curry

1 to 2 lb. whole chicken (or 4 large boneless breasts, each cut in half)
1/4 c. vegetable oil
1 large onion, finely chopped
6 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed
2 fresh green chilis, finely chopped
1 piece (1 inch) fresh ginger, peeled and finely chopped
2 T. ground coriander
1/4 t. ground dried red chilis
2 t. ground turmeric
3 to 4 medium tomatoes, chopped
salt to taste
1/2 c. cilantro, chopped
Directions
Remove the fat and skin from the chicken and cut into 8 serving pieces.
Heat the oil in a large saucepan. Add the onion, garlic, green chilis and ginger; cook until brown.
Add the tomatoes, red chilis, turmeric, coriander and salt; cover and cook on medium to low heat for 30 to 40 minutes, stirring occasionally, to prevent sticking to bottom. Add water, if necessary, and cook until chicken is done.
Sprinkle cilantro over chicken and serve with steamed rice.
Additional caution:It has not been determined whether turmeric is safe for pregnant women and people with gallstones or bile duct obstructions should not use it.

There are some possible interactions between turmeric and certain medications, specifically, blood thinners and anti-inflammatory drugs. People taking either of these types of medications should therefore use turmeric with caution.

More healing spices infor at: Natural Healing Spices Here

M. They have found that the capsicum peppers used for paprika contain six to nine times as much vitamin C as tomatoes by weight.

It's been found that Paprika is an antibacterial agent and stimulant and can be used to help normalize blood pressure, improve circulation, and increase the production of saliva and stomach acids to aid digestion.

Wow! It can do all that? But how do I use it?

If you haven't sprinkled paprika on your eggs, meat, poultry, soups, stews, fish, vegetables, etc, you are in for a treat when you do.

I especially like it sprinkled on hash browns, in cream sauces and stews. Depending on the type you buy,it can add a sweet or spicy flavor. Check labels to find the type you prefer, sweet or spicy. Do what I do, get both and try them.

Try Beef Parika

INGREDIENTS
1/4 cup shortening
2 pounds lean beef chuck, trimmed and cut into 1 inch cubes
1 cup chopped onion
1 clove garlic, minced
3/4 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon brown sugar
2 teaspoons salt
1/2 teaspoon mustard powder
2 teaspoons paprika
1 1/2 cups water
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/4 cup wate

..DIRECTIONS
1.Melt shortening in large skillet over medium high heat. Eat to make it run smoother and you will see and feel the difference in very little time.

It isn't a major change, just a few basics:

Water: Eliminates waste. It doesn't have to be plain water, although that is best but the liquid in coffee, tea, sodas can be counted as part of the recommended six 8-oz glasses a day.

Fiber: Today's food regimens often skimp on fiber and yet it is easy to get the recommended daily allowance o at least 35 grams a day. Choose whole grain cereal and bread to start your day. For mid morning snack, try a fiber bar, a handful of nuts, or even a batch of popcorn. Lunch can be a salad with chopped veggies of your choice, a hearty vegetable bean soup, and a whole grain roll. Mid Afternoon snack, how about whole grain crackers and some hummus, or an apple? Beans are fiber filled. Enjoy dinner and be sure to include plenty of vegetables and a salad.

Exercise: It goes without saying that exercise will improve your circulation which will improve your skin.

Those are just a few of the basics. High blood sugar, the result of eating large amounts of sugar, leads to the need for the body to store that extra sugar and that storage occurs as fat, which most often leads to an increased risk for heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and some cancers.

Can sugar really be as addictive as cigarettes? The average person eats an astonishing half-pound of sugar a day. For many of us, we don’t eat that much sugar because we want to, but because we have to—much like any other addiction.

Addiction to sugar begins almost as soon as a child starts to eat solid food. Eating habits adopted in childhood can be hard to change, to say nothing of the damage it incurs early in life.

A study done by Sibylle Kranz, PhD, , a registered dietitian and assistant professor of nutrition sciences at Pennsylvania State University found that:

On average, added sugar intake was 14 teaspoons per day for kids aged 2-3 and about 17 teaspoons per day for those aged 4-5. The highest level of added sugar for the younger kids was 23 teaspoons per day and more than 26 teaspoons per day for the older kids.

No wonder so many of us have sugar addiction? And the sad thing is, today's kids are eating even worse than we did. Cereals contain huge amounts of sugar. Re-structured foods that claim 'health benefits', have decreased fats but added sugar.

If you are addicted to sugar, look at what your child is eating. Track his/her consumption of sugar and begin to find ways of decreasing the daily intake.

There are studies that claim children today, because of their eating habits, might not have the life span of their parents. Don't let that happen to the ones you love.

Look for ways to change your sugar addiction and you will be able to change your child's. It's one of the most important things you can do for both of you.

'Sugarettes', by Dr. Scott Olson ND,

This amazing book details specific and actionable steps every individual can take to master their diets and take control of their addictive relationship with sugar.

Guarantee yourself and your child a long and healthy life span.

M. A banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy.

Research has proven that just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is the number one fruit with the world's leading athletes.

But energy isn't the only way a banana can help us keep fit. It can also help overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and conditions, making it a must to add to our daily
diet.

Depression: According to a recent survey undertaken by MIND amongst people suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating a banana. This is because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel happier.

PMS: Forget the pills - eat a banana. The vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood.

Anemia: High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anemia.

Blood Pressure: This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt, making it perfect to beat blood pressure. So much so, the US Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit's ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke.

Brain Power: 200 students at a Twickenham (Middlesex) school (England) were helped through their exams this year by eating
bananas at breakfast, break, and lunch in a bid to boost their brain power. Research has shown that the potassium-packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert.

Constipation: High in fiber, including bananas in the diet can help restore normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to laxatives.

Hangovers: One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana milkshake, sweetened with honey. The banana calms the stomach and, with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and re-hydrates your system.

Heartburn: Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body, so if you suffer from heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing relief.

Morning Sickness: Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness.

Mosquito bites: Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many people find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation.

Nerves: Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system.

Ulcers: The banana is used as the dietary food against intestinal
disorders because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over-chronicle ulcer cases. It also neutralizes over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach.

Temperature control: Many other cultures see bananas as a "cooling" fruit that can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of expectant mothers. In Thailand , for example, pregnant women eat bananas to ensure their baby is born with a cool temperature.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Bananas can help SAD sufferers because they contain the natural mood enhancer tryptophan.

Smoking &Tobacco Use: Bananas can also help people trying to give up smoking. The B6, B12 they contain, as well as the potassium and magnesium found in them, help the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal.

Stress: Potassium is a vital mineral, which helps normalize the heartbeat, sends oxygen to the brain and regulates your body's water balance. When we are stressed, our metabolic rate rises, thereby reducing our potassium levels. These can be rebalanced with the help of a high-potassium banana snack.

Strokes: According to research in The New England Journal of Medicine, eating bananas as part of a regular diet can cut the risk of death by strokes by as much as 40%!

Warts: Those keen on natural alternatives swear that if you want to kill off a wart, take a piece of banana skin and place it on the wart, with the yellow side out.
